A song I like

A song by One Republic.
Entitled If I Lose Myself

Where and when did I first hear this song?

I heard this song when I was on a road trip with my family, and it came on the radio a couple of times. At first I didn’t give much thought to the lyrics or even noticed it was on because I was busy engaging with the family. After sometime during the ride back home when everyone else was tired, I noticed this song on the radio and well, damn. After that I tried so hard to search for the title within the song itself but I couldn’t figure it out. I listened to it till the end and finally the radio DJ introduces the song.

“That was One Republic with a new one, ‘If I Lose Myself’ and this is Fly FM”

And the rest is history.

Why do I like this song?

Honestly, I don’t know. There’s just something about the lyrics, the tone and the music that really intrigues me. The music speaks to me. The singer has a lovely voice, I feel like I can just throw away my music collection and listen to this one track for hours, days, months and even years.

I guess what I really like about this particular song is it’s rhythm. There’s an upbeat to it and also a slow beat to it, I can’t really put my finger on it. But hey, the important thing is that I like it. It’s different. It’s calming.

The lyrics are just as beautiful as the song. It’s meaningful, especially if you have a partner that you’re madly in love with. Everything makes perfect sense if I listen to it. Songs these days never make sense, always about sex, drugs and parties. Sure it’s nice to hear it when you’re at a club but it never really impacts you the way good music does. Like this one.

The verse that I like the most.

You can feel the light start to tremble

Washing what you know out to sea

You can see your life out the window tonight.

If I lose myself tonight,

It’ll be by your side…

This is the chorus of the song. And I love it. Why? Mostly it’s because they way Ryan Tedder sings the lines so smoothly and I just melt every time I hear these lines. As the young people call it “eargasm”. There’s a particular intonation and rhythm when the singer sings and it just compliments the music in the background. It’s beautiful.

The lyrics.

Ryan Tedder was inspired to write this song because of his latent fear of flying. Watching his life dangling out the window. Forty thousand feet and still flying. Wondering and the sheer panic going through his mind at the same time that life as we know it could just end in a matter of seconds and somehow finding comfort in the fact that someone special, someone you love or just even a stranger is also experiencing the exact same traumatic event.

What I like about the lyrics is that you can enjoy it with the one person you love. You don’t have to be alone. I guess that’s what I’m trying to say. You don’t have to lose yourself by yourself. Lose yourself with someone. It could be about anything really. You could be pissed drunk but with your friends and all the stupid things you do, you do it with the people you care about. It makes for an unforgettable memory that you’ll never forget.

Doing something by yourself isn’t fun and quite frankly, you’ll just feel lonely.

The music.

The main reason why I love this song is because of the music. It’s relaxing even if it’s a pop-rock and dance-pop song. It has an upbeat tone to which I really enjoy but it’s not too upbeat. It’s just perfect. The way the music compliments the lyrics, and Ryan Tedders voice is just magnificent.
